Candle Lighting 12-16-2012

After the Newtown shootings on Friday, Sunday we were supposed to light the “joy” candle, having a hard time expressing joy, here is what we did:

During our Advent journey we anticipate the coming Savior.

Come Quickly, Lord, and bring your joy!

We anticipate the One who is called Wonderful Counselor.

Come Quickly, Lord, and bring your joy!

We anticipate the one who is called Mighty God.

Come Quickly, Lord, and bring your joy!

We anticipate the one who is called Prince of Peace.

Come Quickly, Lord, and bring your joy!

We anticipate the One who is called Everlasting Father.

Come Quickly, Lord, and bring your joy!

Today we light three candles. The first candle reminds us of our hope in knowing Jesus as our Wonderful Counselor. The second candle reminds us of our peace in proclaiming Christ as our Mighty God. We light the third candleto remind us that our joy is in God.

However, after the events of this week it is hard to exclaim joy this day.  So we light this third candle in remembrance, of those children who have died, of the teachers who taught and protected them, for the parents who must do the unthinkable, and bury a child.

In a world filled with conflict, tension and discord, we look for the hope, peace, and joy that comes through Christ alone. We light these candles to illumine the darkness of the world.  Come Lord Jesus, come and bring your light to the world. Amen.

I think Jesus would understand…
