So I am doing this Advent Photo of the day. You can find out more through Rethink Church. I am going to attempt to write a blurb about each photo, but I admit there may be some posts where several are combined.
Today is the first Sunday of Advent and the word for today’s photo is “go”. My day today is all about going. My family and I are headed home after a 10 day trip “home” to Kentucky and Tennessee. I type this blog as my husband drives me through western Tennessee.
We talked about leaving this morning around 8, but when I awoke I had this pull this drive that said I had to go to church. I have not missed a Sunday in worship during the season of Advent in over 10 years and this is the first time of my ordained life I have taken a Sunday of Advent off. Not because I am so important they cannot live without me, but because Advent is my second favorite season if the liturgical year. And there are so few of them.
So this morning a voice rang in my head “go”. Go to worship. I looked through churches close to my dad’s house and found a Methodist Church fairly close with an 8:20 service. It was terrible. Really, not in the bad theology way but as I sat there I was reminded why I do what I do. It was a mid size congregation that should have been traditional but tried hard to bring in “modern” elements. It was everything my friends in ministry and I rail about. The pastor preaching had more interest in talking about his grand kids and announcing the events coming up and didn’t give a word of what I would consider a sermon.
But what it did was remind me to go home, to go back to work, because we have a lot of work to do. So here I am- going. And preparing, packing, anticipating, and yes- waiting. So here’s my picture as we left my dad’s house and we’re ready to go.
